Sheep’s meadow in watercolor

Sheep seem to irradiate a gentle sense of peace and innocence.
This is a step-by-step mini-tutorial on how to paint sheep in a meadow.

Here is a short video with a step-by-step demonstration on how to use the negative painting technique to paint the sheep.

You can slow down or stop the video at any point to better observe the steps, which are narrated and listed below the video as well.

Step #1
a) Draw sheep on watercolor paper.
b) Apply masking fluid on the body of the sheep and let it dry.
c) Apply a layer of water and a layer of (blue and green) color wet on wet. Let it dry.

Step #2
a) Apply a layer of water and a layer of (darker blue and green) color wet on wet. Let it dry.
b) Remove masking fluid.

Step #3
a) Apply a layer of water and a layer of darker greens, wet on wet, to the upper area to suggest vegetation and trees. The back fence is achieved by painting around it (negative painting).
b) Apply a light wash to each sheep to suggest shadows.
c) Let it dry and add some more shadows.

Step #4
a) Apply darker color to suggest the faces.
b) Apply darker color to suggest legs

Step #5
Apply broad brush strokes on the foreground to suggest close-up grass or vegetation.

Step #6
Touch up with green to suggest grass and shadows for the sheep.

Step #7
Paint more detailed leaves and vegetation on the foreground.
